one-half: love is hell

This is what she might have done: forgotten the white dress and the veil, the sharp trap that is marriage. Flung open the window to the Caribbean breeze. Spread out her arms and lain on the blond island sand, bottle of rum in hand, and never set those trees on fire.

Written for Silverdime in the Yuletide 2004 challenge.

There was once a girl who dressed in red tights and wanted to be a fashion designer. That girl grew up and got balls, though. Now she’s a hardass CIA director and she wears black suits. She’s had the same haircut for five years. The window of her office is scrupulously clean and overlooks roofs of other buildings. Her files are alphabetized.

That girl’s been all over the world and she hasn’t seen anyplace she wants to stay.

GAUL

The trees sway in a hot dry wind and it swirls her red chiton as she stands and watches her father’s army. Waits. Lucilla is always waiting. The centuries slowly file past Marcus Aurelius’s Gaulish palace and they do not look at her. She waits.

The moonship’s black corridors echo under Uther Doul’s heels. Light filters through cracks in the ancient warped boarding, and dust sifts down as he strides down deeper into its hold.

It is silent here and warm, warm as the southern seas that slap the pilings and grease-stained ships’ sides. Doul’s shirt is rolled up at the sleeves, his coat discarded, but he wears his sword still. He frowns and his hands open and shut, open and shut. There — around another passage — is the vampir, the ab-dead one. The one making all the trouble.

Chicago sucks the life out of you in February. It’s so fuckin’ cold that your bones freeze and then it feels like you’re held together with kelvinated wires. And my poor car, probably built to purr around the curves of Highway 1 in sunny California, can’t hack it. The heater takes hours to warm up, and even then it only blows a very thin stream of semi-heated air.

Which is why I’m cussin’ up a storm as I shiver and lean on the horn outside the Canadian Consulate. Fuck’s sake! Fraser said to be here at six a.m., and Fraser is never late, but here it is, six-ten, and who is still sitting outside, freezing his ass to the seat of his GTO? Yours truly, that’s who.

Darkness Is the Devil’s Time (0)

You think the place is fucked up, yeh, but fucked up in a good way, like another dimension or something. Lights go on and off on their own, and the guy in the wheelchair … he is something else for certain. Mr. Brown talks to him like he’s the devil. You’re not so sure. You think you saw the devil once, down in Central America, and he was brown-skinned and carried an AK.

Maybe the devil can change his shape. Something you haven’t thought of, something that makes you profoundly uncomfortable. And why does the devil have an English accent? Is that for your benefit? To make you believe?
