The Last Word (0)

Written for nomad_shan in the Yankee Fic Swap, December 2006. At the time it was plausible, but now it’s basically an AU. *shrug*

one.

Dwight isn’t as happy at Jim’s goodbye party as he thought he’d be. Now that he has a guaranteed spot as Michael’s number two man, it isn’t as fulfilling as he’d thought. Morosely, he downs two cups of punch before realizing that someone has spiked it. Then he tries to close off the punch bowl, but no one’s having that. Michael tells him to stop being such a party pooper; Stanley gives him a scowl and pushes past him unceremoniously. No one has respect for the law; they’re all going to slide off the road and die. Idiots.

It’s just another excuse to get mostly drunk and say stupid things to one another. Darryl tells Jim to have fun on his trip to Austria. Angela makes her excuses and leaves early, and Bob Vance comes to take Phyllis out to dinner. Most of the time, Jim stands off in a corner pretending not to stare at Pam, who is pretending not to stare at him. This party, thinks Dwight, is worse than the Saint Patrick’s Day party when Creed threw up green beer. Everyone seems to sense it eventually and finally, when the punch bowl is empty, even Meredith staggers outside. Michael takes one look at the mess and disappears. No one’s left but the cameramen, and they do not help. Dwight begins to clean everything up, and is surprised to see Jim picking up the decorations.

loss aversion

This is how it might go:

James Bond adjusts his bow tie as he stands outside the casino. Cars whiz by on the road and expensively dressed people pass him on the left and right, seemingly unaware that they might get run over.

James looks at the casino and its bright lights. He remembers Solange, dead in the hammock, covered in sand, eyes open and staring. All her money and beauty hadn’t stopped her death. Death can’t be stopped. Perhaps the only alternative is to delay it awhile. Or to stop thinking about it.

“Sod it,” says James, pulls off his bowtie, and disappears. No one ever sees him again. Le Chiffre wins the poker game and Vesper Lynd lives. And that’s how it might have gone. If James had known the future, he might have given up $100 million to terrorists in order to save Vesper’s life. Or he might have tried something else. Like crawling onto Le Chiffre’s yacht and opening his guts out onto the deck. Then the whole point would have been moot. Death can’t be stopped. But if you’re James Bond, and you have your armor on, you can at least delay your own.

Weiss tries and fails, upon getting out of the taxi in front of the Radisson Hotel, to balance three bottles of wine and a plate of weird assorted deli cheeses. “Crap,” he grunts as the cheeses begin the inevitable slide onto the sidewalk.

Luckily Sydney is there to help. “Are you my official cheese-catcher?” he asks as she slides lightly out of the seat behind him and grabs the platter. She smiles.

Bright is not stupid. He isn’t. He isn’t. Things just . . . have a way of slipping out of his head. Take history, for example. Columbus discovered America in 1492. In 2002, Bright Abbott rushed one hundred and forty yards in the second-to-last game of the season, adding insult to the other team’s injury, and helped bring about a spectacular, fiery win.

This is what she might have done: forgotten the white dress and the veil, the sharp trap that is marriage. Flung open the window to the Caribbean breeze. Spread out her arms and lain on the blond island sand, bottle of rum in hand, and never set those trees on fire.

In the corner of the unused corral, Jack pukes into the dust and tries to ignore the sharp throb in his ribs where the bull kicked him. Slowly, coming closer, he hears Cal Hawkins’s boot-tread, and then Cal puts a hand on the back of his neck and Jack remembers Ennis again, tangling a hand in his hair, and he has to fight not to bring up more bile.

for the “elizabeth smart challenge” (using a line from her poetry).

When the incendiaries lit the sky
A face smiled its divine calligraphy:
It was Helen crowned with Troy’s debris.
–Elizabeth Smart. “Love in Wartime.”

The image wakes him out of an already uneasy sleep: Sydney, standing in the middle of the office, looking pleadingly at him, wanting him to understand. It hadn’t been that long ago: she’d been dressed in black and looking like a Valkyrie, calling war down on her enemies. But in the middle of chaos, she’d spared a glance for him, as if she knew what he was thinking. Retrospectively, she probably had.

Many thanks to Celli for her kind (and discerning) beta.

It’s not a dark alley they meet in, but a vast, brightly lit ballroom in Los Angeles. The Radisson Hotel, shiny and tall in the midst of many other shiny buildings, is virtually deserted at one in the afternoon. Sark feels uncomfortable standing in the middle of the blank hardwood floor, holding nothing in his hands, a tenet dictated by his contact, Lilah Morgan.
